Gov’t Says NMG Investigations Nearing Completion: Media Stakeholders Await Clear Timeline on NMG Reopening. Ownership Changes Cited as Part of Ongoing Probe.

It is nearly three weeks since security agencies suspended operations of Nation Media Group Uganda, leaving more than 1,000 journalists and other employees affected. While media organizations and civil society groups continue to raise concerns over the impact of the closure on press freedom and access to information, the government says investigations into the matter are progressing and nearing completion.

The Minister of ICT and National Guidance has provided an update on the ongoing probe.

Nearly three weeks after the closure of Nation Media Group Uganda, uncertainty remains over the future of one of the country’s biggest media organizations.

The shutdown affected more than 1,000 journalists and other employees, attracting reactions from local and international media organizations, press freedom advocates, and civil society groups, who have called for a transparent and timely resolution.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, Minister of ICT and National Guidance Justine Kasule Lumumba said investigations into the security concerns that led to the suspension of operations are still ongoing.

Lumumba said the investigations are progressing well and expressed confidence that they will be concluded soon, after which the government will communicate the findings and the next course of action.

The minister also revealed that investigators had established changes in the ownership structure of the media company, saying the government is working with relevant authorities to ensure that the process is handled in accordance with the law.

However, the government has not provided a specific timeline for the completion of the investigations or indicated when Nation Media Group Uganda could resume operations.

As the probe continues, journalists and other employees remain uncertain about their future, while media stakeholders continue to call for a process that balances national security concerns with the protection of press freedom and the public’s right to information.
