Government Cancels Over 1,200 Overlapping Land Titles in Mukono in Major Land Registry Reform
In a significant move towards improving land management and transparency, Uganda’s Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has canceled 1,237 overlapping land titles on the blocks 190, 193, and 530 in Mukono Municipality. The cancellations follow a comprehensive land registry audit aimed at addressing long-standing registration errors that have caused confusion and disputes over land ownership.
The anomalies stemmed largely from overlaps created during colonial-era urban planning, where old urban blocks were imposed on existing mailo land without adequate coordination. The recent exercise, which focused on Mukono’s Kyaggwe County, was made possible through the digitization of the national land registry, enabling authorities to identify discrepancies that previously went unnoticed under manual records.
Minister Judith Nabakooba announced the cancellations during a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, emphasizing that this cleanup is essential to tackling land fraud, safeguarding public interests, and restoring trust in the land registration system. She praised the diligent efforts of the Mukono Zonal Office and the Ministry staff in executing this important task.
The Ministry reassured landowners and the public that land transactions on the affected blocks can now proceed smoothly with the updated, verified records in place. This initiative marks a positive step toward more transparent and secure land management in Uganda.
