Government Chief Whip Responds To Opposition MPs’ Plan To Boycott State Events
PRIMA
The Government Chief Whip, Denis Obua Hamson, has advised the opposition Members of Parliament to attend the State of the Nation address scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 6th June, and the budget reading for next week, 13th June, to which the legislators had said yesterday that they wouldn’t show up.
This comes as a response to the members led by the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi who yesterday termed the two events as mere ritualistic events and a mockery to Ugandans.
Yesterday, as the Ministry of Finance launched the FY24/25 national budget, opposition MPs led by the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, resolved to announce their plan to boycott the State of the Nation address scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 6th June, and the budget reading for next week, 13th June, terming the events as a ritual and a mere mockery to Ugandans.
Addressing journalists at Parliament today, the Government's Chief Whip, Denis Obua Hamson, voiced his advice to the opposition MPs, to accord the two-state events their presence as responsible leaders of the nation.
Regarding the ongoing activity to have honourable members append their signatures to move a motion to censure four bank bench parliament commissioners for allegedly giving themselves service awards totalling over 1.7 billion, the Government Chief Whip called on MPs under the NRM party to put a pause to their participation.
Contrary to LOP’s disapproval towards the Speaker Among’s recently declared plan to hold regional parliamentary sittings, Obua said it does not offend any law as long as the presides where they decide to sit are subjected to promulgation by the speaker.
The State of the Nation address will be held tomorrow, 6th June, at Kololo Independence Grounds chaired by the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, while the national budget reading will take place next week, Thursday, 13th June 2024.
