Government Launches Road Rehabilitation Project In Rukiga District For Enhanced Economic Opportunities
The government has initiated the restoration of an 8.2km Mparo-Noozi-Butambi road in Rukiga District, valuing the project at Ushs1.06 billion. The Ministry of Works and Transport officially launched this endeavour, aimed at improving connectivity between Rukiga and Rubanda, traversing Mparo Town Council, Rwamucucu Sub County, and Nyamweru Sub County.
During the commissioning of the project, Roland Ndyomugyenyi Bish, the Member of Parliament for Rukiga County, revealed that he actively lobbied for the inclusion of this road in the District Urban and Community Access Roads Project, an initiative under the Ministry of Works and Transport aimed at improving the country's road network.
Ndyomugyenyi emphasized that consultations with the Rukiga District Council led to prioritizing the Mparo-Noozi-Butambi road due to its current condition and strategic importance.
He highlighted that the road passes through an area known as a food basket for the district, facilitating connectivity to other districts, particularly Rubanda. He says that this connectivity creates numerous opportunities for locals, especially in the transportation of goods to various marketplaces.
Eng. Musa Mwine, the contract manager for the construction project, announced plans to upgrade the community road to a district road by widening it to 7 meters. He urged locals to cooperate emphasizing that there would be no compensation for this activity, as the ministry aims to ensure smooth transportation for the residents.
Rukiga District Chairperson LCV, Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, emphasized the significance of the area, citing numerous institutions such as churches, schools, health facilities, and marketplaces that heavily rely on good transport access. He underlined the area's vital role as a major source of agricultural products in the district.
Residents expressed relief as they have been facing numerous challenges due to the poor state of the road, hindering their day-to-day activities.
The 1.06 billion contract for the rehabilitation project was awarded to Mita Engineering and Logistics Company Limited, and the completion is expected within six months.
