Government Pressed Against The Wall Over LC1 Elections

Ramson

The speaker of parliament Anita Among has today postponed parliament sitting until the government comes up with a clear plan on when to hold LC1 elections after their five-year term expired on the 10th of this month. it was noted that a total of 59 billion Uganda shillings are needed to organize these elections.
The attorney general directed parliament to take the issue to court.

During today’s plenary sitting members of parliament were expecting to hear from the attorney general on what plans the government has put in place to hold the lc1 elections.

The lc1 leader’s term expired on 10th July and this put the government on the spot over failure to hold elections on time. The attorney general told members of parliament that government is aware of the expiry term of these local council leaders and the cabinet is yet to sit and forge a way forward on the matter. The attorney general also confirmed that these leaders have heard their terms extended until further notice.

This did not go well with members of the august house who on several occasions have suggested that these elections be held as soon as possible.

According to legislators, the attorney general's move to have the terms extended is illegal because there are no clear statutory instruments upon which he bases to give the extension.

Kiryowa Kiwanuka amused the house when he asked any aggrieved members to feel free and take the matter to court.
The speaker was prompted to adjourn the house since death to allow the government time to consult and advise the country on the matter. The speaker vowed parliament will not continue its operations with some of the country's programs running on illegalities.
According to the minister for local government Raphael Magyezi, 59 billion Uganda shillings is needed to organize both lc1 and women council elections across the country.
