The Government of Uganda has officially signed the contract for the construction of the 115.8-kilometer Kitgum–Kidepo Road, a UGX 480.9 billion infrastructure project expected to transform access to Kidepo Valley National Park, stimulate tourism, strengthen trade, and improve livelihoods across Northern Uganda and the Karamoja sub-region. Leaders say the project marks the end of years of anticipation and a major milestone in the country's transport infrastructure agenda.

The signing of the Kitgum–Kidepo Road contract marks one of the government's largest strategic road investments aimed at opening up Northern Uganda and unlocking the economic potential of the Karamoja sub-region.

The 115.8-kilometer road, which links Kitgum District to Kidepo Valley National Park, has long been identified as a priority tourism and trade corridor because it provides the main road access to one of Africa's most celebrated national parks.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi, said the UGX 480.9 billion project demonstrates the government's commitment to expanding infrastructure that supports economic transformation, regional integration, and inclusive growth.

He directed the contractor to commence construction immediately to ensure the project is delivered within the agreed timelines.

Officials from Standard Chartered Bank, the project's financial partner, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Uganda's infrastructure development.

Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Rughani said the investment reflects confidence in Uganda's economic future, noting that improved transport infrastructure creates opportunities for tourism, education, trade and community development.

Board Chairperson Maria Kiwanuka described the agreement as a landmark investment that will improve mobility, create employment opportunities, and uplift the livelihoods of thousands of Ugandans.

The minister of trade said the road will improve the movement of goods and services, lower transport costs, and strengthen business opportunities across the region, while also enhancing security and market access for local communities.

The minister of tourism, wildlife, and antiquities, Tom Butime, said Uganda cannot fully exploit its tourism potential without quality road infrastructure.

He noted that easier access to Kidepo Valley National Park, one of Uganda's premier tourism destinations, will increase tourist arrivals, boost investment in hospitality, and create more employment opportunities for surrounding communities.

The minister of works and transport, Fred Byamukama, said the road has remained a major challenge for residents, tourists, and transporters for many years, especially during the rainy season when sections become difficult to navigate.

Once completed, the Kitgum–Kidepo Road is expected to significantly improve access to Kidepo Valley National Park, lower transport costs, promote cross-border trade, strengthen security, and accelerate socio-economic transformation across Northern Uganda and Karamoja. The government says the project forms part of its broader strategy to modernize the national road network and unlock the tourism and investment potential of previously underserved regions.
