Grace Villa Marathon Unites Hundreds In Sports And Charity
JOB NAMANAYA
Hundreds of people came together to embrace the spirit of sports and charity at the inaugural Grace Villa Marathon. The marathon was held in support of Grace Villa, a home for vulnerable girls in the Kabale district, as it marked its 10th anniversary.
Participants from both Uganda and the international community united in solidarity to help the girls' home fulfil its vision of constructing a resource centre to enhance the skills and opportunities for these vulnerable girls.
The marathon featured three categories: 21 kilometres, 10 kilometres, and 5 kilometres. Leading the event was Bishop Amos Magezi, representing the North West Ankole diocese, who was the chief runner. With a heartfelt prayer session, he encouraged the participants and after flagged them off.
In a fiercely competitive 21-kilometre category, Louis Niwagaba emerged as the victor, while Edson Katureebe claimed second place. Barnabas Mugume triumphed in the 10-kilometre race. The 5-kilometre race mainly comprised corporate participants with some choosing to walk their way to the finish line, all contributing to the noble cause.
The participants commended the organizers for conceptualizing an event that not only showcased their talents but also allowed them to make a difference in the lives of these deserving girls.
The organizers expressed their delight at the success of the first edition and announced that the Grace Villa Marathon would become an annual event, continuing to bring people together in support of this meaningful cause.
As a token of appreciation, the winners of the marathon were rewarded with mattresses. Additionally, on the same day, the Total Energies Kabale team emerged victorious in a mini-soccer league that was also organized to benefit Grace Villa.
