Gulu RCC Issues Ultimatum On Wetland Encroachment
The Resident City Commissioner of Gulu Jane Okili has warned of a looming enforcement on wetland encroachers in the city.
She also issued one month ultimatum to wetlands encroachers to leave or be forcefully evicted.
This follows a presidential directive issued last year on preservation of wetlands across the country.
Jane Okili, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner while addressing the press in Gulu town yesterday directed wetland encroachers to leave before the end of March 2023 or face forceful evictions.
The directive is intended to help in restoration of wetlands as most of them remain occupied crops, car washing bays and settlements.
She says that those who will not respect the directive risk losing their property.
Lajul Erick, resident of Lacankwete Layibi-bardege division Gulu City was last week arrested by environmental police and charged with backfilling/diverting water course and erecting permanent structures in wetland without authorization from NEMA.
He however says that they are doing activities which are environmental friendly.
The car washing bays at Green valley along Pece wetlands appealed for alternative government support before the eviction.
