Hailstorm Devastates Farmland in Hoima: Over 500 Hectares Destroyed, Farmers Count Heavy Losses. Affected Families Appeal for Urgent Government Support
A devastating hailstorm has destroyed more than 500 hectares of crops in Hoima District, leaving hundreds of farmers counting heavy losses and appealing for urgent government intervention after homes, livelihoods, and a place of worship were severely damaged.
The storm, which struck on Monday, tore through Kisukuma Sub-County, affecting two parishes, Haibale and Bukona and hitting at least eight villages, including Kyakasaato, Bukona, Kyakayaya, Kikonkona, and Haibale.
Residents say the hailstorm lasted several minutes but left widespread destruction in its wake, flattening gardens and damaging property.
A wide range of crops were wiped out, including beans, bananas, sweet potatoes, simsim, cocoa, coffee, maize, groundnuts, and cassava, dealing a major blow to household incomes and food security in the area.
Homes were also damaged, along with a Seventh-day Adventist Church structure in the community.
More than 200 farmers are now grappling with losses, with some also reporting the death of domestic animals and poultry.
Several affected residents say they had invested heavily in this planting season, with some taking loans they now fear they may not be able to repay.
Local leaders have begun assessing the extent of the damage, as calls grow louder for immediate government support and intervention to prevent further hardship.
Authorities are yet to announce specific relief measures for the affected communities.
