Handover Of Kabalega International Airport Pushed To October 2023

The handover of the Kabalega International Airport in Kabale Sub County, Hoima district has been pushed to October 2023.

This is because the government is yet to sort out the completion of the control tower and other operations.

The Kabalega airport, which will handle oil-related cargo, was supposed to be handed over to the government on 17th February 2023 however it was extended by eleven months.

This is according to Amos Muriisa, the spokesperson for SBC Uganda, a company that was contracted to develop this airport.

Muriisa says the delay was a result of the lost time during rainy seasons and Covid 19 lockdown where the company was forced to lay down some workers.

The airport is close to the border and there have been concerns over the planes entering DRC airspace.

But Muriisa explains that once the airport starts operating, receiving cargo planes they will be taking off facing an opposite direction to avoid entering the airspace of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This was revealed during a guided tour for all government communicators organized by the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.

Allan Ssempebwa, the public relations officer of Uganda National Roads Authority has noted that UNRA, they are going to embark on constructing access roads in the industrial area starting with a 3.5 Km access road. Ssempebwa says that the government is going to construct over 700 KM to support the oil industry.

The project is being funded by UK lenders identified as Standard Chartered Bank with guarantees from the United Kingdom Export Finance who agreed to lend Uganda 307 Million Euros after compilation, it is going to be the second international airport in the country alongside Entebbe International Airport
