Health Ministry Ps Dr. Atwiine Cautions On Unhealthy Food Choices
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Diana Atwiine has cautioned the public against consuming unhealthy foods which can expose them to chronic diseases. She advised people to choose healthy foods over junk food to avoid diseases.
The PS made the call while presenting key achievements of the ministry in implementing the NRM Manifesto 2021-2026.
Dr. Atwiine also noted that there has been a significant increment in Uganda’s population and the ministry is having a challenge matching the provision of health services to the rapidly rising population.
According to the 2014 national census, Uganda population stood at 34. 6 million, with a 3.0% population growth rate. This is high and in about 10 years, the population is estimated to have risen by over 10 million to over 45 million people. According to the health ministry, this presents a huge challenge to the provision of adequate health services.
According to the health ministry, the consistent consumption of unhealthy foods can predispose an individual to a number of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and arthritis. Dr. Atwiine advised against the consumption of unhealthy foods to ensure a healthy life.
Dr. Atwiine explained that the ministry is grappling with inadequate funds to pay health workers. She also noted that there have been medical stock outs, including drugs in some health facilities, among other challenges.
The PS, however, notes that some key milestones have been achieved, including expanding the cancer departments in different regional referral hospitals across the country, the effective management of emerging diseases and the outbreaks of epidemics.
The aspiration of agenda 2030 (SDG3) calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting the well-being at all ages, which Uganda has assented to.
