Health Officials Urge Continued Caution Despite Containment Success: Uganda’s Health System Stronger Than in Past Outbreaks. Public Encouraged to Report Suspected Cases Promptly.

Uganda's response to the Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease outbreak is showing significant progress, with no new confirmed cases reported since June 21. Health officials say swift response measures and improved preparedness have helped contain the outbreak. Although 20 confirmed cases and two deaths have been recorded, 16 patients have recovered, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and continue observing preventive measures.

Uganda continues to register progress in containing the Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease outbreak, with no new confirmed cases reported since June 21.

Health authorities say a total of 20 confirmed cases and two deaths have been recorded, most of them linked to cross-border travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Sixteen patients have since recovered.

Despite the positive progress, health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and continue observing all recommended preventive measures.

Speaking in an interview, the director of public health and environment at the Kampala Capital City Authority, Dr. Isaiah Chebrot, said the success in containing the outbreak is a result of coordinated efforts between KCCA, the Ministry of Health, and other partners.

He said surveillance, contact tracing, public awareness, and rapid response mechanisms have played a critical role in limiting the spread of the disease.

Dr. Chebrot emphasized the importance of reporting suspected cases immediately, saying early detection enables timely treatment and helps prevent further transmission of the virus.

He added that Uganda's health system is now better prepared to respond to Ebola outbreaks than in previous years, thanks to improved surveillance systems, trained health workers, and strengthened emergency response capacity.

He nevertheless called on the public to remain alert and continue observing the recommended preventive measures to sustain the gains made in containing the outbreak.

Meanwhile, Uganda is extending its Ebola response beyond its borders by supporting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the outbreak originated. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi recently announced that Uganda will deploy medical experts to eastern DRC and support the establishment of additional Ebola treatment centers as part of strengthened cross-border cooperation.

The intervention will focus on surveillance, case management, laboratory services, infection prevention and control, and contact tracing to help contain the outbreak at its source and reduce the risk of further cross-border transmission.

This support builds on a bilateral agreement between Uganda and the DRC to coordinate joint surveillance, mobile treatment units, laboratory services, referral systems, and risk communication along the shared border.
