Hoima Referral Hospital To Construct Ugx. 10bn Three Storied Maternal And Child Complex

Hoima Regional Referral Hospital has launched the construction of the Maternal and Child Complex worth ten billion Uganda Shillings.

The three-storied building will house the Maternity Ward, Theatre, Postnatal Ward, Gynecology Ward, and Mortuary among others.

The project is being funded by the Government of Uganda and Construction Work will be undertaken by the National Enterprise Corporation NEC of the UPDF.

National Enterprise Cooperation of the UPDF will be in charge of the construction of the new maternal and child complex building at Hoima regional referral hospital which will house the maternity ward, and gynaecology ward among others.

According to the Hospital Director Dr. Sophie Namasopo, The Hospital receives eight hundred to nine hundred mothers every month from the Districts of Hoima, Hoima City, Kikuube, Kagadi, Kibaale, Kakumiro, Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Masindi, Buliisa and Kiryandongo.

Each month three to five mothers die in the Hospital while giving birth. Dr Charles Balungi the In charge of the Gynaecology Ward at the Hospital says mothers who die are mismanaged by those they live with in the communities and they receive them very late.

Dr. Sophie Namasopo the Director of Hoima Regional Referral Hospital says the new structure will help them reduce congestion at the Hospital. She says that they have been experiencing a challenge of lack of enough space to accommodate the increasing number of patients.

She also reveals that construction will be done in a phased manner depending on the funds available.

Captain Brian Buhanda the Project Site Manager reveals that the first phase will last for four months as they wait for the government to allocate them more funds.

Badru Mugabi the Hoima Resident City Commissioner RCC and Silvia Nalumaga the Hoima Deputy Mayor have commended the Hospital Administration for thinking about mothers and Children noting that this will enable them to lessen maternal plus infant mortality.

Hoima regional referral hospital was opened in 1935 but it was upgraded to a regional referral hospital in 1994.
