Hoima Sugar Utilizes 6 Out 24 Square Miles Leased For Sugar Cane At Kyangwali
Hoima Sugar Limited has utilized six square miles which is part of the nine square miles of land that was recommended by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) at Kyangwali ancestral land in Kikuube District.
Hoima Sugar leased twenty four square miles of land from Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom but NEMA only cleared them to plant cane on nine square miles and the other thirteen square miles will be for restoration purposes.
In 2022, the Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Dr. Barirega Akankwasa said Hoima Sugar Limited had not followed some of the guidelines set for them to enable the conservation of Kyangwali ancestral land in Kikuube District. Dr. Akankwasa directed the police in Kikuube to ensure that they enforce the guidelines.
Amlan Tumusiime, the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner, who is also the Chairperson of the District Security Committee, oversaw the inspection of the said sugarcane plantation on the land in question.
He says he found that Hoima Sugar has only utilized the land which was cleared by NEMA for cane growing and left aside three square miles.
Tumusiime commended Hoima Sugar for employing the local people who are able to sustain themselves economically from their earnings.
Charles Yamuremye, the Supervisor Hoima Sugar Ltd, says that when more land acreage is planted with sugarcane it means more sugar production which will lower the cost of sugar.
He has added that they have already started harvesting cane in some parts of the plantation.
Area local leaders in the area have asked the company to implement corporate social responsibility initiatives by improving and maintaining community access roads.
