IGG Probes Top Kabale University Managers

The Inspectorate of Government has launched investigations against the top management of Kabale University following allegations of discrimination in staff promotions and recruitment as well as a review of university policies.

According to sources at the university, the top management allegedly influenced the recruitment of staff and had others promoted based on ethnicity and religion. It is said that these unethical practices have been happening from the time Kabale University was taken over by the Government in July 2015.

The Deputy Inspector General of Government, Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, visited the Kabale University main campus at Kikungiri Hill to begin preliminary investigations against the top management following allegations of bias and influence peddling in the recruitment and promotion of staff.

The Deputy IGG held a closed-door meeting with more than 200 members of staff, both the teaching and non-teaching staff.

Ms. Muhairwe was accompanied by Sam Agaba, a senior official from Inspectorate of Government in charge of the Kigezi sub-regional office.

After the meeting, Muhairwe said that her office took note of a number of complaints from the university staff, support staff, and members of the public, accusing the University's top management of unfairness and corrupt practices in promotions and recruitment of staff.

Muhairwe said that the Inspectorate of Government gave the Kabale University top management two months to respond to the allegations. She added that next week, she will lead an IG team to meet with the University Council to present and discuss the complaints from staff.

Our efforts to get a comment from the University management were futile as none of the authorities was willing to comment on the issues. However, in an off record discussion with Canon Johnson Baryantuma Munono, the University Secretary, refuted the allegations against the university management. He welcomed the investigations and noted that the management will cooperate with the Inspectorate of Government.
