Jiggers Affecting Communities In Kanungu

Jiggers Affecting Communities In Kanungu

Residents, especially children of Matanda village Kihiihi Sub-County Kanungu District are battling with jiggers, largely due to poor hygiene amongst many families.

Besides, many children have been abandoned by their parents and live alone in their homes. It is said that the parents leave their homes in search of jobs and sometimes take long without returning while others are drunkards.

The jiggers problem in Matanda village, Kihiihi Sub-County in Kanungu District has largely afflicted the children. There is water shortage in the area and there are very few sources of clean and safe water lack of clean water. Gerald Tugume of Hope Ministries Uganda that is working to change this state of affairs says there is need to sensitize parents on positive parenting since many of them spend most of their time drinking alcohol and therefore abandon their families.

Some residents say that since this area borders Queen Elizabeth National Park, many parents leave their homes and go hunting in the park in search of food for their families where they sometimes stay for days without returning home.

There are also service delivery challenges in Matanda village where the nearest schools and health centre are many kilometres away. Hope Ministries has now constructed a community school and a health centre and the director believes that these facilities will contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the community.
