JLOS Analysis Of 2022 Police Crime Report

The Annual Police Crime Report of 2022 that was released last week should not just be about numbers but it’s also important to interrogate the reasons behind the numbers.

That is according to Lucy Ladira, the Programme Coordinator, Criminal Justice Agencies at the Secretariat of the Justice and Law Order Sector.

Ladira, who addressed journalists at the police headquarters in Kampala, said that the public should not focus on the numbers, for instance of more cases reported to the police, but rather why it was so, in the year under review.

According to the 2022 Annual Police Crime report, 26,746 cases were reported but investigations were not concluded in the year under review. While giving an analysis of the report, Lucy Ladira, the Programme Coordinator and Advisor at Justice, Law and Order Sector, noted that more needs to be done by the police, other security agencies and the community in understanding the processes and reasons behind the numbers in the annual crime report.

She advised an Electronic Information Management system is needed if details behind numbers are to be properly evaluated.

The 2022 Annual Crime Report launched on 22nd February 2023 indicated that 231,653 cases were reported in total, an 18% increment from 2020.

Meanwhile, the police spokesperson, Fred Enanga noted that more guns have been recovered from criminals since the crime report was released last week. Enanga added that the police had arrested some suspects in kidnap but more cases of murder and kidnap have been recorded.

According to Enanga, the police are doing all it takes to counter-terrorism, activities by the Allied Democratic Forces  (ADF) in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. He appealed to parents to protect their children since some individuals are luring children to join rebel groups.

The Traffic Police Spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima announced that operations to stop all those with unpaid Express Penalty Scheme (EPS) tickets started on the roads on Monday 27th February 2023. She appealed to motorists to ensure that they have no pending tickets to avoid inconveniences on the road.
