Judiciary Pledges To Clear Backlog In 2023.

The Chief Justice, Chigamoy Owiny Dollo has encouraged judicial officers to improve their performance and avoid irregularities in their service. The head of the Judiciary made the appeal during the opening of the New Law Year at the High Court premises in Kampala.

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja who represented the President as the chief guest, thanked the Judiciary for the commitment of the judicial officers to their work.

The Opening of the New Law Year officially marks the beginning of the work of the Judiciary after the long festive season. 

Speaking at the event, the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, urged the legal fraternity to show commitment to their work when handling cases. He noted that this will be their way of giving back to the society.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Nobert Mao applauded the legal fraternity on dispute resolution by promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms through mediation, plea bargaining, small claims procedure among others.  He said, this will bring transformation in communities.

The Chief Justice, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny Dollo called for more funding to enable the Judiciary build more court offices countrywide which will help decreasing the case backlog in the courts of law.  He noted that the process is ongoing. He pledged that in 2023, the Judiciary will promote Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to save resources. 

He pledged that there will be no situation to make the judiciary of Uganda complicit and there will be no tolerance to whoever facilitates delayed justice. 

The chief guest, Hon Robinah Nabbanja who represented the President Museveni, thanked the judiciary for the collaboration it has always had with other arms of government and noted that the opening of the new law year has given the public hope of service delivery.

According to the Judiciary, the cases backlog has been significantly reduced and this has been attributed to the Judiciary Transformation Agenda that was developed with a mission “Enhancing Access to Justice to Our People”.
