KACITA Uganda Calls For Rescheduling Of Dates For New Number Plate Registration

KACITA Uganda Calls For Rescheduling Of Dates For New Number Plate Registration

The government represented by The Ministry of Security  and the ministry of Works and Transport, entered into an agreement with Joint Stock Company Global Security, a Russian firm to install new number plates that can be tracked.

KACITA, a business support association in Uganda, has come out and said the introduction of number plates and a tracking device which will communicate to cameras installed around for safety in real time, is a good step by the nation.

The move is expected to start effectively 1st July 2023 and according to KACITA, the project has not been made clear to ugandans.

The registration of new number plates with trackers and replacement of old ones is costing 713,400 ugx for both a car and a motorcycle. Replacement of old ones will cost 150,000 ugx for vehicles and 50,000 ugx for a motorcycle. KACITA has called upon government to revisit this and clarify why the prices of a new number are too high compared to replacement.

According to KACITA there has been no sensitization and clarity to the public.

There are questions on how safe People’s data will be in the hands of police, since the new number plats have technology to capture owners data.

Ntambi Micheal a representative from Safe Boda & E traders appealed to government to extend the implementation date of 1st July to a later date when they are ready and the public is well sensitized about the whole process.

Uganda is estimated to have close to 2.4 million vehicles and more than 1.4 million motorcycles and if each of them is registered afresh, the government will rake in up to Shs2.8 trillion.
