Kampala Flyover Traffic Diversions

Motorists, especially boda boda riders and small scale traders at the Clock Tower area and other areas affected by the ongoing construction of the Kampala Flyover Project, have cried out over loss of business.

They say the construction work has led to a reduction in their income since their customers have resorted to using alternative routes.

However, as Gloria Irankunda reports, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has given them assurance that traffic flow will normalize by the end of March 2023.

The ongoing construction of the Kampala Flyover project has rendered the entire area from the former Shoprite Supermarket building, parts of Entebbe Road, Clock Tower and towards Nsambya, impassable for motorists. Some of them are now lamenting, crying out over loss of business.

TUMUHIMBISE KENNETH – Boda Boda Rider, Clock Tower Poster Stage “We have seen a decrease in customers who fear lots of dust along this stage. So, we don’t expect income soon as long as the contractors are at work”

According to the Boda Boda riders, the construction work is moving at a slow pace since the contractors work only during the day and stay away on Sundays.

One of the Boda-boda riders also complained of constant traffic in the open areas, besides the police regularly impounding the motorcycles of Boda Boda riders who violate traffic rules. He argued that some of his colleagues violate   traffic rules because of the tough working conditions in the area yet they have to earn a daily income.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) which is the overall supervisor of the Kampala Flyover project the Closed Clock Tower area for motorists for two months from 14th January 14 to 14th March 2023. Traffic on Entebbe road was diverted to Mengo and Mukwano Road

The Japanese government, through the Japan International Cooperation agency (JICA), is funding the Kampala Flyover Construction and Road Upgrading Project (KFCRUP), alongside the Uganda Government to a tune of Shs224b shs. The project is expected to be completed within 36 months from 2021 when it was launched.

It involves the construction of flyovers at the "Clock Tower towards Nsambya and Entebbe Road, and is intended to decongest the city by reducing traffic jam.
