Kampala Requires A More Robust Budget For Road Maintenance, Rehabilitation, And Construction - Kasyate

Simon Kasyate, the spokesperson for KCCA, has disclosed that the potholes in Kampala Capital may not be addressed as planned due to insufficient funds to cover worker salaries, road maintenance, and rehabilitation costs.

Furthermore, Kasyate highlighted that the parliament's failure to provide more financial resources for KCCA's pothole repairs could pose an enduring challenge for KCCA in addressing the multitude of issues that affect the citizens.

He acknowledged the fact that Kampala needs a more robust budget for maintenance, rehabilitation and also the construction of new roads

Simon shared this information during an exclusive interview with CoU Family TV.

Last year, in a bid to transform the city's infrastructure, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) announced a groundbreaking initiative to eliminate potholes by mid-January 2024.

The commitment came on the heels of a substantial financial boost, with the African Development Bank allocating a total sum of 288 million USD to the government for comprehensive road construction and rehabilitation.

Recently, the parliament provided funding for KCCA to repair the potholes in Kampala. Nevertheless, State Minister for Kampala Hon Kyofatogabye Kabuye came out to express concerns that the allocated funds were inadequate.

According to Simon Kasyate, the KCCA spokesperson, Kampala's total network spans 2110 kilometres, with less than 700 kilometres being tarmacked.

In addition, Kasyate highlighted that although several projects are currently underway and the government of Uganda has taken steps to address the issue, a significant amount of additional investment is necessary to improve the roads. He also called upon the citizens to appreciate the progress that has been achieved so far.

He also commented on the payments of the Community casual workers under their Sacco’s and 7 hills

In addition, concerning the yellow fever vaccination, he stated that KCCA is working in conjunction with the Ministry of Health to ensure that individuals between 9 months and 60 months old receive the vaccination. This is especially significant as Kampala, their place of residence, is deemed unsafe.
