Kawempe North By Elections Marred By Violations

The FDC party has decried the government’s security over the alleged violations that were carried out during the Kawempe north by elections which led to the arrest of several members of the party and led to the injuries of some including a journalist.

According to the party spokesperson, it’s not the first time FDC members have been arrested in connection with election related activities. In July 2024, 36 members were arrested in Kenya and deported back to Uganda, where they were charged with terrorism.

FDC Spokesperson  Kikonyogo John addressing the media at the party headquarters Najjankumbi cautioned the security agencies against torturing and mistreating Ugandans mostly during the election periods. The caution follows the recent incident during the Kawempe north by elections were one of the journalists Ibrah miracle was hit while other party members were arrested on February 26th during nominations.

Recalling the dangers of misinformation during the era of the infamous radio katwe, Kikonyogo warned that forcing journalists to undergo training at Kyankwanzi which is portrayed by NRM ideology could lead to compromise of their objectivity and lead to biased reporting

The incident in Kawempe north made concerns about press freedom and human rights violations in Uganda, with calls for security agencies to exercise restraint; FDC however demands an official apology from government to journalists for the violent event.
