KCCA Commissions Traffic Control Project

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has commissioned a project to improve traffic management in Kampala, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at a cost of UGX 47 billion.

The project includes the upgrade and signalization of 27 key junctions across the city, as well as the construction of a traffic control center at City Hall.

The commissioning event was attended by KCCA officials and government leaders at the KCCA Hall.

The commissioned project has been implemented by KCCA with the support of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at a cost of Ugx 47 billion. The project has involved the improvement and signalization of 27 junctions around Kampala and the construction of a traffic control center at City Hall.

KCCA Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki explained the importance of the lights installed on the streets of Kampala and the building they opened, saying that the building will be used to monitor traffic congestion.

According to Buzeeki, the building cost more than 47 billion and has been under construction for 30 months

Lord Mayor Ssalongo Erias Lukwago said they have been waiting and expressed discontentment with the smart city initiative that has taken long, adding that smart city means improving the city by reducing emissions.

However, he said that while this has been achieved, there remains a need to build railways to help alleviate traffic congestion.

The Minister of State for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, commended the Japanese International Cooperation Agency for their love for Uganda through the various initiatives.

The minister echoed the government’s continued commitment to developing Kampala City through the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni.

The project is expected to enhance road safety, reduce congestion and travel times, and support Uganda’s economic growth by lowering transport costs and improving journey reliability.
