KCCA Condemns Abrupt Demolition of Houses in Wetlands: Requests Election of Committee to Handle Evictions. NEMA Requested to Stop Abrupt Evictions and Demolitions

KCCA, the body in charge of organizing the city and maintaining its standards, at city hall in Kampala today asked National Environment Management Authority, the body in charge of environmental conservation, to stop demolishing people's houses claiming they are situated in wetlands, and first carry out accurate surveys to establish the right affected areas.  those said to have settled in wetlands also asked that there be a committee to plan for better development of the areas said to be wetlands.

KCCA today reached out and asked the body in charge of conserving the environment, NEMA to stop demolishing people's houses without understanding exactly where the wetland starts and exits. This in line with the recent evictions done. They therefore asked that there be a proper committee that works on proper planning of this land as some of it is considered to be in wetlands yet it is by law, not.

They also asked the government to be fair so it can take care of the people whose houses it demolished, and they can also get somewhere to stay and enjoy themselves in their country.

The Lord Mayor of Kampala, Eng. Ronald Balimwezo while speaking to journalists, said that the leadership was prompted to write to NEMA and ask for the stop of this operation.

after the people of Kawala village cried out about NEMA demolishing houses,

He asked the leaders to meet NEMA and set up a committee that will guide matters regarding wetlands and educate people before they settle.

He asked the committee that he would be elected to plan for people to consider putting up low-cost quality houses.

He also asked those buildings in wetlands to stop immediately and await guidance from authorities.

The Mayor of Lubaga Division, Mbereze Zacchy also said that NEMA should compensate the people whose houses were demolished as there’s a certain group of people it compensated, saying every evictee should be treated the same

Councillors also condemned these acts of demolishing people’s homes and not giving them options on where to shift to.
