Kenya Bids Farewell To Raila Odinga: A Nation Mourns A Statesman
In a historic farewell marked by solemnity and national unity, Kenya today honored the life and legacy of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga with a state funeral at Nyayo Stadium, where thousands gathered to pay tribute to a man celebrated as a fearless champion of democracy.
As his family shared heartfelt memories and leaders praised his lifelong pursuit of justice, the nation stood still — mourning not just a political icon, but a symbol of resilience, courage, and reform.
Following the repatriation of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s body from India earlier yesterday and the public viewing, the country today held a state funeral for the former Prime Minister of Kenya.
The day began with national leaders paying their final respects at the Parliament Buildings, led by President William Ruto.
Later, the body was taken to Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi for the State Funeral Service, where thousands of mourners, including regional dignitaries such as Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, gathered to honor his memory.
Tributes flowed throughout the day, describing Raila Odinga as a statesman and true leader who fought relentlessly for democracy and equality. His children Rosemary, Winnie, and Raila Jr. shared personal reflections of their father, celebrating his love, humility, and enduring guidance. His wife, Ida Odinga, recalled treasured memories and urged Kenyans to uphold peace, echoing his final words of unity and hope.
Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga, mourning the loss of his brother, called on the family to remain united and keep alive the values and vision that defined Raila’s public life.
Both the former President Uhuru Kenyatta and current President William Ruto paid glowing tributes, describing him as a patriot whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Raila Odinga’s body will next be taken to his family’s ancestral home in Western Kenya, where tens of thousands are expected to gather before a private burial on Sunday.
His passing leaves a profound void in Kenya’s political landscape a vacuum in the opposition, with no clear successor as the nation looks toward the 2027 elections.
As Kenya bids farewell, the memory of Raila Amolo Odinga endures not only as a political leader, but as a visionary who turned struggle into strength and hope into a national legacy.
