Kigezi Farmers And SMES Advised On Maximizing Opportunities In Africa Free Trade Zone

Farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Kigezi sub-region have received guidance on harnessing the potential of the Africa free trade zone to enhance the growth of their businesses. The advice was shared during a two-day training program by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) awareness project held at Kirigime Guest House in Kabale municipality.

Representatives from over 50 SMEs participated in training aimed to familiarize them with the opportunities available under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement signed in 2018. This historic agreement has created a single African market with over 1.3 billion consumers, presenting immense prospects for businesses across the continent.

Brown Twebaze, a consultant trainer attached to UNDP, emphasized the importance of aligning SMEs with existing marketing needs in order to attract clientele at a continental level.

Twebaze highlighted the significant potential for growth and success if SMEs are to effectively tap into the expanded market.

James Odongo, a communications officer at the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce, explained that the training programs will be conducted nationwide and selected SMEs may have the opportunity to visit other African countries, which can significantly enhance their marketing and sales potential.

Participants who benefited from the training expressed their gratitude, stating that it provided them with valuable insights into the numerous opportunities available to them.

Reports project that the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement will lift an estimated 30 million people out of poverty in Africa, with an additional 68 million individuals escaping moderate poverty.
