Labour Officers Urged to Safeguard Workers, Strengthen Family Livelihoods: NSSF And NOTU Train Labour Officers to Protect Workers and Strengthen Family Welfare. Officials Urged to Promote Soc

For many Ugandan families, a stable source of income, decent working conditions, and financial security after retirement are essential for their well-being. It is against this background that the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), in partnership with the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU), has trained newly elected labor officers and workers' councillors during a two-day capacity-building workshop in Hoima City ahead of assuming office next month.

With thousands of households depending on working family members for survival, labor leaders say increasing awareness and enrollment in NSSF is key to helping families prepare for life after retirement while promoting long-term financial security.

Officials also say protecting workers from exploitation and ensuring their rights are respected enables parents and guardians to continue providing for their families with dignity and confidence.

They have further warned labor officers against corruption, saying denying workers justice through bribery not only affects employees but also threatens the welfare of the families that depend on them.

NSSF Board Member and Workers' Representative in Parliament Agnes Kunihira says labor officers have a responsibility to defend workers' rights while encouraging employers and employees to save with NSSF so families can enjoy greater financial security in the future.

Employers have also been encouraged to register their workers with NSSF, with leaders saying social security provides families with a stronger financial cushion when workers retire or face unexpected challenges.

However, participants say effective protection of workers and their families will require better funding for district labor offices. They cite inadequate transport and limited operational resources as major obstacles to reaching workers in need.

Labor officers are also calling for stronger collaboration between government, employers, and employees to create safer workplaces, saying healthy working environments contribute to stronger and more resilient families.

Workers have also been encouraged to report all forms of workplace abuse and violence, with officials saying timely reporting is essential in protecting livelihoods and ensuring families do not suffer the consequences of labor rights violations.

As the newly elected labor officers prepare to assume office in July, stakeholders hope their renewed commitment to protecting workers' rights and promoting social security will translate into safer workplaces, stronger household incomes, and more secure futures for Ugandan families.
