Leaders Urged to Prioritize Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Farming in Uganda

Sembabule District, Uganda – In a powerful address during a wealth creation rally held in Sembabule District, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni called on leaders across the country to shift their focus towards eradicating poverty within households. Emphasizing the need for grassroots solutions, Museveni pointed out that discussions often center around infrastructure development, such as roads and electricity, while neglecting the essential goal of lifting families out of poverty.

The President outlined practical strategies for wealth creation, introducing the innovative 4-acre model approach. This model advocates for maximized productivity on a small scale, demonstrating that prosperity is attainable regardless of land size. Museveni highlighted the inspiring success seen in Greater Masaka and Sembabule, where local communities have embraced farming as a means to escape poverty.

Recognizing the pressing issue of drought and its impact on crop production, the President emphasized the urgent need for prioritizing irrigation. By ensuring a reliable water source for coffee, bananas, and other key crops, farmers can protect their yields and contribute significantly to the nation’s economy.

Former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sam Kutesa, alongside other dignitaries, commended President Museveni for his unwavering commitment to combating poverty and improving living standards across Uganda.

Since its launch in July 2013, Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) has aimed to facilitate national socio-economic transformation by transitioning subsistence farmers into commercial ones, thus helping to alleviate poverty sustainably. The initiative follows the successful pilot program implemented to support Civilian-Veterans in the Luwero-Rwenzori Triangle.

As Uganda faces economic challenges, this renewed focus on household poverty eradication and sustainable agricultural practices presents a hopeful pathway for achieving prosperity and improved livelihoods for all citizens.
