Legislators Call For Permanent End To Kasese Flooding
Members of Parliament have expressed concern over the continued flooding of River Nyamwamba, in the Kasese district
The river Nyamwamba in Kasese district has for about 10 years been flooding annually, killing people, displacing people and destroying crops and
Now members of Parliament want the government to revise its disaster response to cater for funds that will see water blocked from getting to occupied land.
On 22 June 2023, River Nyamwamba burst its banks once again, leaving the Kilembe-Kasese road cut off and many residents in fear for their lives.
It's not the first time this river has burst its banks. Oftentimes, people have lost their lives and property destroyed due its flooding.
The response to this has always been resettling the affected people for a short time before these people returned to their homes.
As many times as these disasters happen, the government has come in to advise communities to plant trees and put culverts to channel the water among others. These have however not yielded to people's expectations.
Legislators now want the government to study the river and come out with mechanisms that can hinder the river from flooding the neighbouring places
They have called for the establishment of barricades high enough to block the water from reaching the neighbouring communities.
It’s said a meeting has been held between the leaders and the office of the prime minister on the resettlement of the victims of the unending floods.
The office of the prime minister has proposed 17 million shillings be given to each family and they vacate the river banks and the disaster-prone areas.
The residents are said to have accepted the proposal. They however want to retain their land fur cultivation.
