Legislators Decry Violence Surrounding Kawempe North Bi-Election

Legislators have condemned the ongoing brutality surrounding the Kawempe North by-election. These sought explanations from the government on who the in charge of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) group is, while also emphasizing the need to respect the journalists.

With just seven days until the Kawempe North bi-election slated for March 13, 2025, the surrounding area remains tense as civilians express concern about the recent brutalities witnessed.

During plenary today, the State Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. David Muhoozi, presented a statement on the recent happenings in Kawempe that was also accompanied by an update delivered by the State Minister of Industry, David Bahati, on recently injured journalist, Ibra Miracle, who is said to have been discharged from the hospital. The two ministers mentioned the government's plan to foot Miracle’s medical bill and have him compensated.

Despite acknowledging the government’s commitment to ensuring the betterment of Ibra, MPs condemned the brutality imposed on journalists, calling on various stakeholders to stop taking the fourth estate for granted.

The lawmakers further sought explanation for the deployment of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Task Force (JATT) in Kawempe, pushing the government to do the needful in observing the Constitution.

The state minister of internal affairs gave assurance to MPs, saying they will work on engaging the responsible stakeholders in order to achieve a solution for the concerns.
