Machete-Wielding Thugs Bring Fear To Kabale Residents Ahead Of Christmas

Residents in Kabale are expressing frustration with the local police over perceived negligence in night patrols as machete-wielding thugs instil fear in Kabale town ahead of the Christmas season. The increased attacks by these thugs have resulted in injuries and property theft.

The assailants are taking advantage of poorly lit corners around town, with some dark spots even located on the highway. Disturbingly, recent attacks have occurred near police barracks and in areas like Bugongi and Kigongi, all within Kabale municipality.

An interior designer in Kabale town fell victim to the brutality of these thugs and is still nursing wounds. Kato narrated his harrowing experience, recounting an incident from last week when he returned to Kabale late at night. He was ambushed, chased, and attacked by a gang of over four thugs, resulting in serious injuries, including a cut on his head.

Kato expressed disappointment in the lack of prompt action by the police after his incident. He urged the police to fulfil their responsibilities by increasing night patrols, especially in poorly lit areas that pose risks to residents moving around at night. Kato emphasized the need for effective street lighting in various parts of the town.

Ampeire Albert, a radio presenter at a local station, shared a similar experience. He was waylaid by three armed men at his gate who demanded money and valuables. Forced into his house, Ampeire suffered property loss, and he attributed the rise in such incidents to increasing poverty levels and a perceived lapse in security.

Ampeire called on the police to step up efforts to address the situation and improve security conditions in the town.

Another victim, Atuhaire Balaba, lost his bag containing academic documents to the machete-wielding thugs. He highlighted the vulnerability during late-night hours and insufficient street lighting on some town streets.

Balaba, alongside other victims, urged the police to enhance night patrols and address the rising concerns of insecurity.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi sub-region, acknowledged a recent surge in thefts and attacks, attributing the incidents to the approaching festive season. He encouraged individuals to prioritize their security by avoiding night movements alone. Maate assured the public that the police, in collaboration with other agencies, have plans to intensify patrols to curb the activities of the machete-wielding thugs

This marks another instance of machete-wielding thugs causing havoc in Kabale municipality and other parts of the country, notably in Masaka. The situation has prompted concerns among residents about the safety and security of the town, especially as the festive season approaches.
