Makerere Students Trained On Cyber Security

A group of students at Makerere University have been trained on cyber security during the cyber awareness and innovation expo held at the University under the theme: “Steering and operationalizing innovation to fight cybercrime.”

The training was conducted by the Julius Nyerere Leadership Centre based at Makerere, in conjunction with the 88th Students Guild Ministry of Information and Computer Technology.

A group of Makerere University students have received training on cyber security and the application of technologies, processes, and controls to protect systems, networks, programmes, devices and data from cyber-attacks.

The training aims to reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and protect against the unauthorised exploitation of systems, networks, and technologies.

Kabuulwa Muzafaluh, the Minister of Information and Computer Technology in the 88th Makerere University Students Guild said that the training will also enable students to earn some money through their social media by exposing their products to the online audience.

One of the trainers was Mwesigwa Joshua, a student from the College of Computing and Information Sciences. Mwesigwa, who is also an innovator at Google Developer Student Clubs, noted that the technological world requires the public to understand and profitably make use of the internet. He added it is important that students have knowledge of handling social media accounts and how to avoid hackers.

A trainee, Mwesigye Habib noted that the expo is beneficial to the youths who often use computers and therefore they need to have skills in safe computer use. Mwesigye highlighted some of the new things he learnt.

The Cyber Security Strategy of 2022 as derived from the National Cyber Security Strategy of Uganda provides development paths, policy and technical recommendations to achieve Uganda’s Vision 2040 to transform Uganda into a competitive upper middle-income country.
