
Makerere University 73rd Graduation Ceremony
Makerere University has begun the week-long ceremonies to graduate students in the 73rd Congregation of the over 100-year old institution.
The graduands on day one were drawn from the Colleges of Natural Sciences and Health Sciences as well as the School of Law.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, who is also the First Lady, alongside the University Chancellor, Prof. Ezra Suruma.

It was all joy and excitement among the graduands and their parents as Makerere University this morning kicked off its week-long 73rd graduation ceremony at the institution’s main campus in Kampala.
The university Chancellor, Professor Ezra Suruma who presided over the ceremony, appreciated President Yoweri Museveni and the Ministry of Education and Sports for the financial support to the education sector in general and Makerere University in particular. He noted though that Makerere still needs more funds to effectively conduct research and improve infrastructure.
He also thanked the university staff and students for the effort they put in to enable the graduation despite the challenges that were presented by the Covid-19 Pandemic induced lockdowns and other disruptions.
The First Lady And Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, who was the guest of honour, appreciated the parents, the Chancellors and the University management for the good job in guiding the students and supporting them all ways. She encouraged the new graduates to use their newly acquired skills not only to change themselves for the better but also their communities.
The Minister also urged the graduates not to fall into the trap of devious people promoting immorality, homosexuality and also resist corruption. She asked the lecturers, students and teachers to join the campaign of against HIV/AIDS.
The new graduates were requested to know the purpose of their lives and also have a vision for the future.
A total of 13,221 graduands, of whom 6,809 (52 percent) are female and 6,412 (48 percent) male will be conferred various degrees during the 73rd Congregation which ends on Friday.
A total of 102 of these will get PhDs, 1,378 master’s degrees, 108 are postgraduate diplomas while 35 are undergraduate diplomas.
On the final day, Friday 17th February 2023, degrees will be conferred on students from the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology as well as the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
