Members Question Continued Committee Snub By MoEDU
The Ministry of Education has been given up to appear before the parliamentary committee on Education to explain the student’s admissions to public universities.
The ministry officials were expected today to appear before the committee but the minister snubbed the meeting
The committee chairperson John Ntamuhira told legislators that he had received a phone hour the meeting and that a member from the ministry won’t be attending the meetings.
Members fault the ministry officials for continuing to take the committee for granted which affects their performance.
Led by the committee chairperson and Bunyarugulu Member of Parliament John Ntamuhira, the committee members were eagerly waiting to meet their guests from the Ministry of Education.
These expected officials from the national council for higher education, the vice-chancellors forum for public and private universities, commissioners of education, minister for education among others.
The members were however shocked when only the national council for higher education respected the invitation.
According to the committee chairperson, an invitation to the meeting was sent to the ministry on 4th July and the minister responded by confirming the state minister for higher education, J C Muyingo would be attending the meeting
to their shock, the same minister did not attend with no formal communication submitted.
The committee is investigating several matters including admission of students at public universities, and discrepancy in admission periods among others.
This is said to be affecting entities like the Higher Education Students financing board, in granting students loans.
Ntamuhira also says many students have missed out on admission under unclear circumstances while those who have been admitted especially government programs, the government has failed to avail facilitation to them.
The sitting has been adjourned to tomorrow with the hope that the minister and summoned officials will be able to attend the meeting.
Ntamuhira says they will be forced to revoke powers given to them under rules of procedure should the minister fail to appear again. The committee has the powers of the high court and can cause the arrest of any person once they deem it necessary.
