Minister Balaam Urges Eligible Ugandans to Offer Themselves for Leadership Positions:LC I Elections Scheduled For 28th July, LC II Elections For 10th August. Elections Will Strengthen Grassro

The government has announced the roadmap for the long-awaited Local Council I and II elections following the expiry of the current leaders' term of office. The Ministry of Local Government says the elections will restore elected leadership at the village and parish levels while ensuring continuity of local administration.

The term of office for LC I and LC II leaders expired on 28th June 2026, paving the way for fresh elections across the country.

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre today, the minister for local government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, said the Electoral Commission has set 28th July for village/cell elections and 10th August for parish/ward elections. The minister said the current leaders will continue serving in a caretaker capacity until newly elected leaders officially assume office after the handover process.

The minister said local councils remain the first point of contact between government and citizens, playing a key role in mobilizing communities, supporting service delivery, and coordinating government programs at the grassroots.

He also reminded local leaders to comply with the law, which prohibits an individual from holding more than one political office at the same time.
