Ministry Of Health Warns Of Fake Mosquito Nets On The Market

Members of the public have been warned about the camouflaging tendencies of mosquitos which have led to increased cases of malaria in Uganda. The increasing cases of malaria are said to be greatly affecting the productivity of Ugandans

Musima Alex an entomologist from the Ministry of Health says mosquitos continue to adapt to the human lifestyle and therefore preventing mosquito bites should as well take a different direction.

Mosquitos are majorly known to cause Malaria specifically if one is bitten by female anopheles mosquitos. These have for years been known to bite at night starting from 6 pm to 6 am when people are indoors.

This explains why interventions have majorly focused on sleeping under insect-side treated mosquito nets, encouraging the public to close windows and doors during the night among others.

However, an entomologist at the Ministry of Health Musima Alex says these interventions have not been as effective as expected with mosquitos changing their approach to biting.

These increasing cases of malaria are not just affecting the health sector but as well the productivity of Ugandans

There are concerns however that the fight against malaria has been left to the hands of government only. Peter Mbabazi, head of finance at the Ministry of Health says it's everyone's responsibility to fight malaria

However, the public has been warned about fake mosquito nets that have dominated the market. Peter Mbabazi says the effectiveness of the mosquito net depends on whether the net has been treated or not.

This is the parliamentary forum on malaria prepares to mark world mosquito day, which is celebrated on the 29th of August every year.

The chairperson parliamentary forum on malaria Dr Batuwa Timothy says a lot still needs to be done to eliminate mosquitos in the country.

As there are efforts to fight mosquitos among the public, it's been noted that while emphasis is put on one species, another comes up which has failed the endeavours to completely eliminate mosquitos.
