Mixed Reactions Emerge Over Corruption Allegations Against Former Speaker Among: Kampala Dwellers Call for Accountability and Stronger Anti-Corruption Action. Citizens Urge Gov’t to Prioritiz
Mixed reactions continue to emerge from different sections of the public following ongoing corruption allegations and investigations involving former Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among.
While some Ugandans have welcomed the investigations as a sign of growing accountability within public institutions, others say the country’s leaders must shift focus toward addressing the daily struggles affecting ordinary citizens, including unemployment, poor healthcare services and the rising cost of living.
Corruption allegations involving senior government officials have over the years remained one of the most sensitive and widely debated issues in Uganda’s political and public affairs.
Several public institutions and leaders have repeatedly faced accusations related to abuse of office, misuse of public funds and unexplained wealth, raising concerns among citizens who continue to struggle with poverty, unemployment and inadequate public services.
The latest investigations and public debate surrounding former Speaker Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among have once again reignited conversations on transparency, accountability and ethical leadership in Uganda.
In different parts of downtown Kampala, traders, youths and boda boda riders shared emotional and divided opinions regarding the allegations and the broader fight against corruption.
Isma Ssemaganda, a trader operating at St. Balikuddembe Market, said corruption remains deeply rooted within government institutions and welcomed the ongoing investigations involving senior leaders.
Ssemaganda further appealed to government to recover property allegedly acquired through corruption and redirect such resources toward supporting ordinary traders through improved markets and business infrastructure.
A youth trader commonly known as “Microphone Squeezer” questioned reports linking the former Speaker to extravagant spending, arguing that many Ugandans continue to suffer economic hardship while some leaders live luxurious lifestyles.
He added that public resources should instead be invested in sectors such as healthcare and youth empowerment programs.
Meanwhile, Ssemwanga Godfrey praised Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for publicly speaking against corruption, saying leaders who openly condemn misuse of public resources deserve support from citizens.
Muyunga Joseph also welcomed the public exposure of corruption allegations, noting that many Ugandans have for years witnessed questionable dealings among leaders without accountability.
Citizens called upon investigative agencies to continue pursuing corruption cases involving all public officials regardless of their status or political influence.
Mbaziira Kraish said if investigations establish any wrongdoing against the former Speaker or any other public official, authorities should allow the courts of law to handle the matter fairly and independently.
As investigations and political debates continue, many Ugandans say the country’s anti-corruption efforts will only gain public confidence if justice is applied fairly and leaders remain focused on improving the welfare of ordinary citizens.
