Multi-Stakeholders Approach Is Key In Promoting Safe Screen Environment For Children –Initiator

The advocate of the Safe Screens, Safe Kids campaign, and also head of Marketing at COU Family TV, Owen Mwesigye has said that the only way of aiding the implementation of this initiative is by ensuring that different stakeholders including government, parents and schools among others, take their role in protecting children in this digital age seriously.

On a positive note, top country heads including the IGG, institution heads, and some ministers among others expressed their desire to support this campaign, to promote a safe environment for children. This was at the Safe Screen, Safe Kids campaign launch at Serena Hotel in Kampala.

So many times, the government has shown its intention to promote safe media usage and regulation of content in appropriation to age through introducing laws that the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is expected to implement.

These laws have however had a few loopholes hindering their full success.

The innovator of the Safe Screens, Safe Kids campaign, Owen Mwesigye, who also doubles as the Head of Marketing at COU Family TV noted that if this campaign is to work out and reach full success, all stakeholders including the government, parents, teachers and so on, have to be willing to play their part in shielding children from excessive exposure to unsafe content.

He also noted that the family unit is the stepping stone to establishing a safe media environment for children.

With the launch of the campaign earlier today, the leaders of different institutions seconded the initiative, assuring COU Family TV of the needed support to ensure the protection of children in the digital age.

They say children can also be involved in proactive practices like sports and remind their children of community values to limit child interactions with media.

The Safe Screens, Safe Kids campaign under the 5-year World Collar Breakthrough campaign is an initiative introduced in partnership with COU Family TV to foster a child-safe media environment in homes, schools, and public spaces.
