Museveni Sworn in For Seventh Term, Extending Four Decades in Power: Uganda Enters New Political Chapter as Museveni Consolidates Long Rule. From Bush War to Seventh Term: Museveni’s Journey

History has once again been made in Uganda as President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially been sworn in for a seventh elective term, extending his leadership into a fifth decade in power.

The inauguration further cements Museveni’s position among Africa’s longest-serving leaders, with his presidency tracing back to 1986 after the National Resistance Army captured power following a five-year guerrilla war.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today officially begun another term in office, extending a presidency that started in January 1986.

Born in 1944, Museveni studied political science and economics at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he embraced Pan-African and revolutionary ideologies that later shaped his political path.

He first rose to prominence during the struggle against Idi Amin, founding the Front for National Salvation, FRONASA, which played a key role in the 1979 overthrow of Amin’s government.

Following the disputed 1980 general elections, Museveni rejected the results and launched an armed rebellion against the Milton Obote government.

Together with 26 fighters, he attacked Kabamba Barracks, marking the beginning of the Bush War that lasted from 1981 to 1986.

Operating mainly in the Luwero Triangle, Museveni’s National Resistance Army fought government forces in a conflict that claimed thousands of lives before capturing Kampala on January 26th, 1986.

After taking power, Museveni introduced the Movement system, arguing that it would promote national unity and stability.

He won his first direct presidential election in 1996 against Paul Ssemogerere before defeating Dr. Kizza Besigye in the heated 2001 election.

Over the years, Museveni oversaw major constitutional changes, including the removal of presidential term limits in 2005 and the age limit amendment in 2017, changes that allowed him to extend his stay in power.

He went on to win the 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021, and, most recently, the 2026 presidential elections.

In the January 2026 elections, Museveni was declared the winner with 71.65% of the vote, while his primary challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), received 24.72%, although the exercise was marred with accusations of irregularities from sections of the opposition.

Despite his win, Robert Kasibante, a presidential candidate for the National Peasants Party (NPP), was the only contender who formally filed a legal challenge against President Museveni’s 2026 victory in the Supreme Court; however, the Supreme Court withdrew the petition on February 26 cleared the path for today’s inauguration.

President Museveni has now officially begun another five-year term expected to run until 2031, extending his leadership to at least 45 years in office.

As President Museveni begins another five-year term expected to run until 2031, attention is now turning to what Ugandans should expect in his seventh elective term.

The president has already signaled that the new term will focus heavily on economic transformation, wealth creation, and fighting corruption, describing it as a “kisanja of no more sleep” for both leaders and citizens.

Government is expected to prioritize the expansion of the Parish Development Model aimed at moving more Ugandans from subsistence farming into the money economy, alongside increased industrialization, agricultural commercialization, and infrastructure development. Key projects include regional transport connectivity, such as the Standard Gauge Railway, intended to strengthen trade within East Africa.

The new term is also expected to place renewed emphasis on tackling corruption within government institutions, improving service delivery, and addressing youth unemployment through industrial growth, technology, and skills development.

As Uganda enters another political chapter under Museveni’s leadership, debate continues over the country’s future direction, balancing arguments of stability and continuity against growing calls for democratic transition and political renewal.
