
NEMA Institutes Restrictive Environment Measures
The Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority Dr. Barirega Akankwatsa has announced the administrative penalty scheme for those who abuse the environment, as an administrative measure
Dr. Akankwatsa who addressed journalists at the Uganda Media Centre said that the scheme will commence on 1st April 2023 as per the provisions of the National Environment Act.
According to the Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Dr. Barirega Akankwatsa, under the administrative penalty scheme, the sanctions include payment of a penalty not exceeding 15 billion for individuals, six billion Shillings for corporate entities and a 15-year jail sentence for the violator or both.
Dr. Akankwatsa also told journalists that the government will soon begin creating awareness about the need to preserve the environment across the country and also sensitize the population about this particular law.
However, we tasked Dr. Akankwatsa on whether the government has the capacity to enforce the new law because there have been a lot of challenges in implementing the existing laws.
Parliament enacted the law was providing for the Administrative Penalty Scheme in 2019 but implementation and enforcement began in 2020.
