New Lower Secondary Curriculum To Enhance Learners' Skills
HOPE NYONGEREZA
The Ministry of Education and Sports, through the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), initiated a new competency-based curriculum for Senior One learners in January 2020.
However, the full implementation of the new lower secondary curriculum began in 2022, with Senior Two students leading the way. It has since been rolled out in schools nationwide. Today, we examine how the curriculum has been received.
In a conversation today with Dr Dennis Mugimba, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, it was highlighted that the new lower secondary curriculum was designed primarily to enhance learners' generic skills, technological literacy, communication, and mathematical abilities.
Dr. Mugimba outlined several reforms in the curriculum aimed at improving the teaching and learning experience for both students and teachers.
Training programs have been implemented to support teachers in effectively assessing their students.
Despite efforts to train teachers on the new curriculum, some have encountered initial challenges.
Nevertheless, the Ministry remains optimistic about the performance of the inaugural cohort of students who will undergo the new lower secondary education assessment.
