Nine Suspects Remanded for Aggravated Defilement of Juveniles in Busia
Busia, Kenya — In a significant development, Chief Magistrate Thomas Okoth of Busia Magistrate’s Court has remanded nine suspects to the High Court in Tororo for trial over serious allegations of aggravated defilement involving young girls in the district.
The suspects—Ali Zaidi Wabwire, Sande Robart, Kyaze Jiri, Nyongesa Edrisa, Musa Jimmy, Mutebi Yoweri, Wafula Alex, and Loture Isaac—are accused of targeting female minors aged between 4 and 12 years old across various sub-counties including Masaba, Buyanga, Masafu, and Busia Municipality. The cases span over different days, highlighting the disturbing pattern of the crimes.
During this week's court session, the suspects did not enter a plea but were advised to present their defense during the proceedings at the Tororo High Court, which has the jurisdiction to handle such serious charges—aggravated defilement being a capital offense.
Residents of Busia expressed their outrage and disappointment over the allegations, emphasizing the need for increased child protection. Interviews with local residents, such as Princess Winnie, Abangi Hamphrance, Arafat Kirya, and James Wanyama, revealed a community disturbed by the incident, with many blaming both the suspects and sometimes even parents, who they feel may allow their children too much freedom, making them vulnerable.
As of now, the suspects and their files have been forwarded to the Tororo High Court for further proceedings. Community members are hopeful that justice will be served to protect the young girls from such heinous acts.
