Non Communicable Diseases Scares Health Workers In Rukungiri

Health workers and community leaders in Rukungiri District are concerned that more cases of Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and hypertension are being registered in the area.

They are calling on the health ministry and the private sector to do more to sensitize the people on the prevention of NCDs and also make health services available for those who need treatment.

The appeal was made during the launch of a health camp in Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri district.

Dr. Aston Tumuhimbise, a Medical Officer at Nyakibale Hospital says Rukungiri district in Southwestern Uganda is increasingly recording a high number of cases of Non-communicable Diseases.

A number of residents testified that they are suffering from Non-communicable Diseases that have weakened their bodies.

However, Dr. Tumuhimbise noted that the existing health centers are not only understaffed but also ill-equipped to handle Non-Communicable Diseases.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the Microfinance Support Centre partnered with Kebisoni Sacco, a local saving scheme, and Nyakibale Hospital, to screen the people and also sensitive them to Non-Communicable Diseases

Tuhumure urged other financial institutions to always carry out health camps to help their clients stay healthy.

Dr. Tumuhimbise advises that to prevent NCDs, it is important to do regular physical exercises and have routine medical checkups. Smoking and heavy drinking are also risk factors.
