NRM Begins Nomination Process for 2026 General Elections, President Museveni Set for Key Nomination

Kampala, July 5, 2025 – The race for the Central Executive Committee (CEC) positions in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially kicked off as aspirants started submitting their nominations today at the NRM Electoral Commission offices in Kampala. This marks the beginning of intense political preparations ahead of the 2026 general elections.

One of the highly anticipated events is the nomination of incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is set to be endorsed as the NRM Chairman and Presidential Flag Bearer on Saturday, July 5th. This appointment is crucial as it signals the party’s continued support for Museveni’s leadership and vision for Uganda’s future.

Today, several notable aspirants declared their intentions for influential party positions:

  • Joseph Sewava has expressed interest in becoming the vice chairman for the central region, a role that commands significant influence within party structures.
  • Nzeire Kaguta Shadrack, brother to President Museveni, is vying for the position of National Vice Chairman for Western Uganda. He was among the first to pick up nomination forms.
  • Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, a prominent government minister, is also competing for the Western Vice Chairperson slot and submitted his forms yesterday.
  • Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi has shown interest in the Central Region Vice Chairmanship, having picked up his forms earlier.

Nzeire Kaguta Shadrack, speaking after acquiring his nomination forms, emphasised his commitment to working closely with party leadership to enhance unity, combat impunity, and support the ongoing fight against corruption.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, addressed the media, confirming that all aspirants must meet specific nomination criteria. Notably, aspirants vying for the positions of NRM chairman and presidential flag bearer are required to pay a nomination fee of twenty million shillings. The formal nomination process is now open, with many party loyalists expected to declare their candidacies in the coming days, promising a vibrant and competitive political atmosphere within the party.

As the nomination window remains open, political activity is expected to intensify. The upcoming days will reveal more aspirants aiming for these influential CEC positions that play a vital role in shaping the party’s agenda and Uganda’s political landscape moving forward.
