The race for leadership within the National Resistance Movement’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) is heating up as key nominations have been announced ahead of the party’s internal elections. Several prominent leaders are vying for influential positions that will shape the party's direction heading into 2026.
At the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters, the atmosphere was charged with confidence and ambition. Among the notable nominees is First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, who was officially nominated for the newly created position of First National Vice Chairperson (Female). Kadaga reaffirmed her dedication to the party’s principles and called for unity among members as campaigns kick off.
Another prominent contender is Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi, who is competing for the position of National Chairman of the NRM Veterans League. Muhwezi expressed his commitment to bringing discipline, experience, and a renewed sense of purpose to the veterans' wing of the party.
In the regional nominations, Dan Kidega is contesting for National Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda. Kidega emphasized the importance of grassroots mobilization and regional development efforts to strengthen the party’s influence.
In the women’s league, Hadijah Lolika is vying to represent the Karamoja Region as National Vice Chairperson, with a focus on development and community empowerment.
The competition for the Vice Chairperson of the Central Region is particularly intense, with incumbent Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi facing a challenge from Hon. Haruna Kasolo, Minister of Microfinance. Kasolo committed to boosting economic programs targeting youth and women within the region.
With nominations now closed, all eyes are on the upcoming internal elections, which are expected to be highly competitive and could determine the future leadership trajectory of the NRM. The party’s supporters and stakeholders will be closely monitoring the developments as candidates campaign for their preferred positions.
