NRM Primaries Accelerate with Over 800 Candidates Nominated for 2025 Elections
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries are gaining momentum as the countdown to the 2025/26 general elections begins. Over 800 candidates have already been nominated to contest for parliamentary and district positions across Uganda. This number represents a significant portion of the over 2,700 aspirants who initially collected nomination forms, highlighting intense competition within the party.
Key candidates include seasoned politicians and emerging leaders eager to make their mark. In Manafwa, former Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Dr. Kitutu Goretti, has been nominated to contest the Woman Member of Parliament seat. She expressed her confidence in the progress made in her constituency and her determination to continue building on that momentum.
In Kabale Municipality, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, who recently resigned as Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Wakiso District, is competing for the parliamentary seat. Kamugisha emphasizes his mission to unite communities and promote Pan-Africanism. Meanwhile, Monica Kalungi, who stepped down from her role as RDC Ntoroko, is running for the same district’s Woman MP seat, focusing on grassroots empowerment and continuity.
Incumbent Agnes Kunihira, the Female Workers MP, is seeking to retain her seat, citing unfinished work and her dedication to championing labor rights. In Ndorwa East, newcomer Elvis Twenda is making his debut, promising to improve representation for the area that he believes has suffered from neglect over the past two terms.
Other notable nominees include Milton Muwuma in Kigulu South, who aims to improve public education, and Lauben Alinaitwe in Isingiro West, who is defending his seat and advocating for peaceful campaigns. Sam Bitangaro has also re-entered the race in Bufumbira South.
Party leadership has called on all aspirants to maintain discipline and unity as nominations continue until June 30th. The upcoming primaries are set to shape the political landscape ahead of the upcoming general elections.
