NRM Primaries Ignite Political Frenzy: Over 1,500 Contestants Vow Big Changes for 2026 Elections
As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, the political atmosphere is heating up with fervor and anticipation. Over 1,500 individuals across the country have already picked nomination forms to run for parliamentary seats and local government roles, signaling a vibrant and competitive race.
Candidates are rallying with promises of major change, targeting issues like healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. Reports from various districts highlight a shared desire among contenders to win public trust through ambitious plans and fresh leadership.
Healthcare remains a critical concern nationwide. Many health facilities continue to grapple with shortages of essential drugs, prompting aspiring Members of Parliament and district leaders to pledge swift action.
In southwestern Uganda, former Bufumbira South MP Sam Bitangaro is returning to the race after losing in 2021, now armed with renewed strategy and determination. Meanwhile, in Kasambya, Mubende district, Kyeyune Mohammed is making headlines with his bold development agenda.
In Kazo District, a new candidate is promising to address water shortages, power outages, and crumbling roads, emphasizing basic needs and infrastructure revival as key campaign themes.
Across central and western Uganda, candidates are emphasizing development, accountability, and change. In Gomba West, sitting MP Robina Gureme Rwakoojo is seeking re-election, focusing on empowering women and increasing household incomes.
A notable shift is happening in Mityana, traditionally dominated by opposition politics. Ndidde Yasin, a former Resident City Commissioner, has entered the race for Mityana Municipality, aiming to challenge incumbent MP Francis Zaake of the National Unity Platform. Similarly, veteran politician Fred Ruhindi is back on the trail in Nakawa East, eyeing the seat held by opposition Hon. Ronald Balimwezo.
The contest is fierce and wide open. Since the NRM Electoral Commission opened nominations on June 2nd, Ugandans from Kampala to Kigezi, Kasese, and Karamoja are keenly watching, listening, and preparing to cast their votes in the upcoming elections.
With the race intensifying, Ugandan voters are expecting spirited campaigns that promise real change and development for the nation.
