NRM Sets July 10 for Nationwide Village Barazas: Party to Verify LC1, Women Council Flag Bearers. Tanga Warns Against Independent Candidatures After Primaries.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has announced that it will conduct nationwide village elective Barazas on July 10 as part of preparations for the LC1 and Women Council elections. The exercise, which will cover all 72,000 villages across the country, is aimed at verifying the party's LC1 chairpersons and Women Council flag bearers before the official electoral process.
The National Resistance Movement Electoral Commission has finalized preparations for nationwide village elective barazas scheduled to take place on July 10 in all the country's 72,000 villages.
Addressing journalists at the NRM Electoral Commission offices, Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi said the exercise will be conducted using the NRM village registers under the supervision of village registrars, assisted by polling assistants and overseen by parish registrars, district election officers, and regional leaders.
The Barazas are intended to verify that candidates elected as NRM flag bearers for LC1 Chairperson in 2025 are still alive, willing to contest, and committed to carrying the party flag.
The exercise will also confirm that the five Women Council representatives elected in 2022 remain eligible and willing to represent the NRM in the forthcoming elections.
Dr. Odoi explained that where consensus is reached, candidates will be endorsed through the Baraza process. However, where members fail to agree, elections will be conducted to determine the official NRM flag bearer.
The NRM Electoral Commission also warned party members against contesting as independent candidates after participating in the party's internal electoral processes, urging all successful flag bearers to ensure their names are duly submitted to the Electoral Commission.
Dr. Odoi further revealed that the party has allocated about five billion shillings to facilitate the nationwide Barazas, with the funds earmarked for election materials, logistics and other operational requirements to ensure a smooth verification exercise.
The nationwide village Barazas mark another key milestone in the NRM's roadmap towards the 2026 General Elections as the party moves to complete verification of its grassroots flag bearers ahead of the official national nomination process.
