NUP Makes Strides in Party Nominations Despite Security Challenges

Kampala, June 13, 2025 — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has reported significant progress in their party nomination exercise for the upcoming 2026 general elections, despite facing security-related obstacles. This positive update was shared by the party's Electoral Commission Chairperson, Harriet Chemutai, during a media briefing held at their headquarters in Makerere, Kavule.

Chemutai strongly condemned recent security attacks targeting their supporters and activities, describing these efforts as attempts to hinder the party’s democratic process. “Security forces have repeatedly disrupted our operations, aiming to sabotage our nomination process, but we remain resilient,” she stated.

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, police raided the NUP headquarters ahead of a delegates’ conference, resulting in injuries among several supporters. Nonetheless, Chemutai emphasized that the nomination process for various leadership positions across Uganda continues to gain momentum. By the evening, many aspiring candidates had returned their nomination forms, expressing enthusiasm and determination to contest in the upcoming elections.

Among these candidates is Bishop Tomusange William Bifaki from Mityana District, who has expressed interest in contesting for the Mityana North Constituency seat. Despite some religious and cultural leaders’ restrictions on partisan politics, Bifaki reaffirmed his commitment to representing his community.

Chemutai also urged party members who had been intimidated by security operatives to remain steadfast, assuring them that their rights to participate remain protected. The nomination exercise, which commenced on June 1, 2025, is set to conclude next week, with official candidate announcements expected soon.

As tensions and challenges persist, the NUP remains focused on its electoral ambitions, determined to present strong candidates for the 2026 general elections.
