Opposition Demands Action Against Gen. Muhoozi Over Alleged Abductions Ssenyonyi: We Shall Not Be Intimidated By Military Threats.LOP Calls For Early Recall Of Parliament To Address Rights Co
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has called on President Yoweri Museveni and other state institutions to take action against Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba over what he describes as unlawful abductions and arbitrary arrests. Ssenyonyi warned that Uganda must not drift into military rule and vowed that the opposition will not be intimidated into silence.
The Leader of Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has criticized the government for what he described as continued inaction regarding allegations of unlawful arrests and abductions linked to security agencies.
Ssenyonyi's remarks followed the reported detention of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, a matter that has generated widespread public debate after Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba made statements on his social media platforms regarding Lukwago's whereabouts.
The opposition leader made the remarks during a press briefing by the opposition caucus at Parliament.
Ssenyonyi cited what he described as a growing pattern of arbitrary arrests and detentions targeting political actors and government critics.
He warned that such actions create the impression that the country is increasingly being governed through military influence rather than constitutional institutions.
The opposition leader maintained that the opposition will not be intimidated and called on Ugandans to speak out against actions that undermine fundamental rights and freedoms.
He further appealed to parliamentary leaders and members of the ruling party to guide the Chief of Defense Forces on the limits of his constitutional mandate.
Ssenyonyi urged all arms of government to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability, while calling on Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to refrain from using his military office to engage in political disputes.
The Leader of Opposition also called upon the Speaker of Parliament to recall the House before its scheduled resumption on July 7, saying legislators should urgently address concerns surrounding alleged abductions, arrests, and the protection of constitutional rights.
The latest remarks add to growing political debate over the role of security agencies, civil liberties, and the rule of law in Uganda.
As concerns continue to be raised by opposition leaders and civil society groups, attention now turns to whether the relevant institutions will respond to the calls for accountability and address the concerns surrounding reported cases of unlawful detention and enforced disappearances.
